Configure an Ethernet reader to connect to its host

If you run your host application as a server, you need to configure the readers to establish a connection to the host.

Configure the host in the device settings

Configure the host address as part of the reader's device settings. However, you can't use the standard device settings form you find in BALTECH ConfigEditor.

Please request our Ethernet-server-specific form. Alternatively, you can order tailor-made device settings from us.

For high availability environments, you can store the connection parameters of 2 different hosts. If a connection to the primary host fails, the reader directly switches to the secondary host and vice versa. The reader will always try to reach the host first that it was successfully connected to the last time.

IP address or DNS name?

You can specify either the host's IP address or its DNS name. The latter increases flexibility as you can move the server without having to reconfigure the readers. The DNS name is then resolved by the reader's DNS client as soon as the reader has a valid IP address. To keep track of host IP address changes, the reader restarts the resolving process in regular intervals (default: every 3 hours).

To start working, the DNS client needs to be able to contact the DNS server:

  • If the reader has a static IP address, the configuration must contain the DNS server address.
  • If the reader has a DHCP address, the DHCP server must provide the DNS server address along with the other network parameters.
