Check reader health

If a reader doesn't work as expected, we recommend you check the reader health, i.e. you check if a reader component is defective.

To check the reader health:

  1. Connect the reader to your computer.
  2. Open BALTECH ID-engine Explorer.
    If you haven't installed it yet, you can download it here as part of BALTECH ToolSuite.

  3. Click the reader, then click Select.

    • If several interfaces are shown for the reader, please select HID.
    • Connecting an Ethernet reader works when the reader is unconfigured or required permissions are granted in PKI Encryption and Authorization settings.

    At the bottom of the screen, check the Reader Health info box:

    Symbol Meaning
    2 check marks All good. You can use the reader productively.
    1 check mark The reader's basic functionality works. You can use it for testing, but it's not safe to use it in production. If you plan to use it productively, please get in touch with us.
    warning The reader doesn't work. Continue as described below.
  4. If you see the warning sign, click More Reader Information in the bottom right. Screenshot: More Reader Information button in BALTECH ID-engine Explorer

  5. On the left of the Reader Details page, check the error message displayed in the BootStatus/Errors section:
